About NotOnMap

NotOnMap builds upon the core ideology of rural development. We stimulate experiential visits to remote communities and stand by the simpler ways of life. Encouraging urban travelers to watch, learn and absorb the traditional ways, revives dialogue between the communities and bridges the socio-economic gap between them.

We work to instigate pride among rural locals and showcase the real value of their tangible and intangible heritage. We work to help create self-sufficient, vibrant villages which offer a unique travel experience inspired by social responsibility and a sustainable lifestyle. 


What would the project involve?

You'd be staying at one of the multiple rural villages across India that fall under our transformation project for a period of 3 months. You'd be undertaking responsibilities varied domains of interests under the umbrella of sustainable rural development such as:

  • Resource Mapping to collect knowledge of natural, social and cultural resources in the village
  • Focused documentation of Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) in the community
  • Architectural/ technical support to building construction activities in the village
  • Lending your skills/ support to any on-going developmental project in the village
  • Offering innovative solutions to specific community needs and working on their implementation
  • A training program to build specific capacities among the village community
  • A counseling session with the village locals on diverse social topics
  • A social media campaign to present the essence of life in the village and the special experiences it has to offer
  • Design new and innovative systems to help the rural community
  • Educational sessions with the children and the youth in the community
  • Capturing the progress and ideation in the form of documentaries, blogs, or digital magazines

Eligibility

At an elemental level, we're looking for people who seek an experience that is firmly outside their comfort level and familiarity. We expect that somewhere inside you, there is a desire to bring about a positive change in the lives of people, that you connect with a larger cause, be it social, environmental, or cultural. We expect that you have openness to observe and learn and unselfconsciousness to connect with people who are very different from your immediate cohort.


APPPLY NOW

  • You must be above 18 years of age and open to travel to a specified rural location in India
  • You must have completed at least two years of study in a college-level degree program related to any of the following fields: architecture, art, anthropology, engineering, design, media/ film making, photography, journalism, ecology, environmental science or sustainable development-related studies
  • You must be able to understand and speak English and/or Hindi with reasonable fluency, knowledge of the language/dialect spoken in the specified rural locations will be an added advantage
  • If you're applying as a part of your academic requirement, you will need to provide the official criteria for selecting a firm, expectations from the internship, dates as per your curriculum and an introductory referral letter from your faculty

The number of applicants accepted will be determined by the internship staffing needs of NotOnMap for the upcoming summer.

What is the application timeline?

The application window will open in March. Selected applicants will be notified of their placement in late-March. The on field internships will start from April.

What is the duration of the internship?

The internship will last for a minimum duration of three months.

How many internship batches are there?
